  1. I found this event very interesting because we got to hear more about Nathaniel and his friendship with Steve Lopez. We heard many funny things Nathaniel has said and done while being with Mr. Lopez. For example, going to the White House dressed in all white. After a brief introduction, Mr. Steve Lopez took many questions from the audience. Mr. Lopez ended the event with a book signing. I really enjoyed this event!

  2. During the Q&A event at lunch, what I enjoyed the most was when Steve Lopez mentioned the day he began to see Nathaniel as a friend. According to Steve himself, he began to see a true friendship with Nathaniel the day Steve decided to spend a night at Skid Row. Lopez expressed his friendship with Nathaniel as inspirational. Hearing how much Lopez admires Nathaniel gives it a different meaning than what we read in the book. Lopez also mentioned how he believes the U. S. should prioritize early intervention of mental illnesses. It was also nice to hear how Nathaniel enjoyed the filming of the movie and is currently living in a studio apartment. (Word Count: 114)

  3. I really enjoyed going to the lunch session that Steve Lopez hosted. There were many people, but not too much to the point where people were not able to answer their questions. I was able to ask Steve Lopez if he felt that Jamie Foxx did a good job in portraying Nathaniel in the movie The Soloist. I enjoyed how he talked to us about his current status with Nathaniel. He informed us that they went to the White House and met the president. Steve also said that they were going to attend a concert at Disney Hall on Sunday. Nathaniel enjoyed the experiences he went through since the movie came out and wanted a sequel to come out. I enjoyed it. Word Count (122)...Jezze Tu

I really enjoyed Steve being there too. Steve seems really funny and I enjoyed his stories, too. I heard how not many people were allowed to get their questions answered in the evening event. I'm glad I went to the event in the afternoon. I didn't know he had a book signing
    =(
    Enjoyed the experience though...Jezze Tu

  5. I originally did not particularly care for the book The Soloist. Especially the ending because I felt it was rushed and disappointing because you never knew whether or not Nathaniel ever started taking medication or not. But after hearing Steve Lopez speak at the luncheon where he explained the book, Nathaniel, and himself in greater detail I had more appreciation for the novel. When Lopez talked about what Nathaniel and him were up to now, and described their friendship I had a little more appreciation for the book. Steve Lopez also clarified the ending that Nathaniel was now living in the studio apartment and still wasn’t taking medication. It was kind of disappointing that Ayres wasn’t taking medication but made sense, because Lopez explained that Nathaniel will have to make the decision on his own when he’s ready to get help.

I also liked the question that was asked about how Steve Lopez first discovered that what Nathaniel and himself had was a friendship. I always assumed that Nathaniel and Lopez friendship was defined way later in the book when Lopez came into confrontation with a resident and he had to explain that he was not taking advantage of Nathaniel.

  7. Yea i do agree with your comment. I do think it was cool that Mr. Lopez did infact admit that at first he was desperate to write a column and that h do aything discover a story. Though he did write a Nathaniel Ayers in The LA Times, he admited to all of us that he had no intention in using Mr. Ayers in any form or matter, besides using him to recieve a better understanding of how to view Life and Classical Music. I definitely agree on how the book ended in an abrupt way. It was great to hear Steve mention the current events Nathaniel and him have attended. It gave me a better view of how there is no ending, in reality their friendship is still growing.

  10. (continued from first comment)Steve Lopez really made the afternoon event fun. He made the audience laugh whenever he spoke about his adventures with Nathaniel. Their friendship as explained by Mr. Lopez is different than what we see in the book as well as the film. Although the event went past the time it should have been, I don't think the audience minded, especially because it was followed by an unexpected book signing. Word Count(142)--Genesis Miranda

It was a really fun event, Mr. Lopez had the audience laughing throughout his speech and Q&A. I didn't expect the book signing either but i'm glad he did. I didn't buy my own book so he signed my reporter's notebook.

  11. i enjoyed hearing Steve Lopez talk about his and Nathaniels relationship. i went to the evening event and the only thing i can say i did not like was that Steve did not take more questions. most people read the book and the time he talk all he really talked about was the storyline which we already knew. i wish we could have heard things about Nathaniel and Steve that we did not already know. i also liked the fact that he acknowledged the reason he got to know Nathaniel was because he needed a story to write about. Overall i did respect the fact that he came and gave a speech about his book. I enjoyed the experience and i thought it was interesting.

  12. I truly enjoyed the lunch event with Steve Lopez. We were able to get a better understanding of how Steve and Nathaniel became friends. I really enjoyed how Steve and Nathaniel still remain in contact and as friends. One of the most interesting comments Steve made during the discussion was how Nathaniel has inspired him, and made him remember why he began in journalism. The whole event was great, Steve took many questions from the students as well as the audience, and was very entertaining. I really enjoyed the experience.

I also really enjoyed when Steve said that him and Nathaniel still remain in close contact. Also about how they go to events together such as the white house and Disney concert hall. I think its amazing how they are still good friends.

Although Steve was not looking for a friend, I also agree that it is nice to hear that Steve and Nathaniel are still friends and that they go to events with each other. I went to the night event and Steve also discussed that Nathaniel was an inspiration to him and that is how he knew that Nathaniel was a friend to him.

  15. I enjoyed the lunch event with Steve Lopez. I thought the stories he told and the explanations he gave were well in length, information and amusement. One of my favorite stories was how he talked about writing novels and that he "rather read great books then write mediocre books." I also liked the comments about the actors, Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, depicting them on the movie screen instead of not like their acting.
The comments about the different and interesting columns Lopez is and will write are intriguing and make me want to read them in the LA Times.

  16. I enjoyed the lunch event with Steve and he seemed like a genuine guy. I thought it was interesting how he said the way he began his journalism career was different because he did not enjoy reading in high school or in college. But later on as an adult, he realized he had a lot to catch up on and regretted it because he wished he read back then. I also thought it was also interesting that he mentioned he wrote the book the same time the screenplay was being written. However, Steve said that he titled the book “Imagining Beethoven” because Nathaniel would always mention that whenever he played, he would imagine Beethoven. Overall, I thought it was a great experience and I think Steve knew how to entertain his audience.

  17. I agree with Ann, Steve did seem very genuine. Also I thought it was funny of how Steve was honest about how the title of his book came to be. I appreciated how he did not steal credit for creating the title and that he was honest about what his original title was.
I also agree with Shantelle that Steve Lopez found himself again in meeting and becoming friends with Nathaniel. It is a perfect example of how powerful friendship can truly be.

  18. I attended the lunch event hosted by Steve Lopez and it was interesting to actually see someone who has made a difference not only in someone’s life but also in the world. The thing that I valued most about Steve was the fact that he still has contact with Nathaniel after the book and the movie was made. I also liked the fact that Steve puts all of Nathaniel’s earnings into a savings account so that he has a safe place to keep it. During the lunch event there was one question that was brought up regarding a difference in the movie and in the book and it was that in the movie Steve Lopez was divorced as oppose to in the book he was married with kids.( Word Count-128)

I agree that the information Steve provided was enough. He answered our questions precisely and knew how to amuse us at the same time. After hearing all his different stories, I am also interested in reading the columns that Lopez has written for the LA Times.

  20. I agree with Ann and Amanda, Steve did seem like a great person. I did find the reasoning as to why he chose the title of the book though. I also agree with Shantelle and Amanda that it took Steve Lopez to meet and become friends with Nathaniel in order to find himself again. It just goes to show you the effect single person can have on your life.
