IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO ATTEND THURSDAY'S EVENTS...
If you were not able to attend Thursday's events, please provide here feedback on the whole experience with the The Soloist and the activities related to it.
I was unable to attend due to the stomach flu! Anyways, I thought the whole taking over and running of the Mental Health awareness day for a writing class was interesting. Being a psych major, none of my psychology classes even brought up the the event was taking place, or that we should go check it out. The movie clips were pretty solid and i enjoyed watching them. However, I was kinda bummed nobody came to ask us questions in the morning about our posters. Also finding alternative ways for therapy for mental illnesses was interesting. There is a lot of weird crap out there that people are willing to try. Top pick, virtual reality for phobias. Kinda neat.
I regret not being able to attend the events, as I had planned to go to at least one (the Disney Concert Hall), but unfortunate last minute circumstances would not allow me to be present. It was really a shame too because I enjoy learning about and hearing classical music. "The Soloist" novel gave me a better insight on people with such mental illnesses, and gave me a better perspective of the story, as a whole, as well. I had seen the movie a few months back and, but I had not payed much attention to it. If I ever catch it again, then I will at least have some sort of connection with the characters after reading the book.
I really wish I could have asked a few more questions to Steve Lopez about the problems of Skid Row and what has happened since the publishing of his novel as well as the movie rendition of his novel. I was wondering if there was continued work being done to help LAMP, or if LAMP had a number to contact. Also, I wanted to see what his take on schizophrenia instead of more the book. I wanted to know is experiences with mental illness and what we, as a college group of worried students, can do to help.
That, and I also think I would have enjoyed hearing some of the questions that were asked as some that were discussed in class seemed interesting.
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed too with the turnout for Mental Illness Awareness, but being able to talk with the counselors on campus! Now that was a good experience! Being able to tap into their knowledge of the situation and see what is going on there. I could have sat for hours asking them questions concerning their methodology of talk therapy versus that of medication.
I also do have to agree, being a psych major as well, that this was not a large priority on the Psych Department's list is a bit disconcerting.
